What Is ETIAS?
ETIAS is a new travel authorization framework initiated and developed by the European Commission to enhance the EU’s capabilities against external threats and considerably reduce the waiting time at the EU border, contributing to a more flexible and straightforward European travel experience.
Nationals of 58 countries worldwide, including Canadian Citizens, will be eligible to apply for an ETIAS authorization, enabling you to visit the EU/Schengen Area countries for three years uninterruptedly.
ETIAS France Requirements
From November 2023, Canadian citizens planning to visit France will need valid ETIAS authorization upon arrival at the French border.
Applying for ETIAS authorization is a simple procedure, quickly done under 15 minutes. All you need to do is to fill out the application form by providing your personal, medical, travel, criminal, and employment history and submitting it alongside your biometric passport.

How Does ETIAS France Work?
After submission of all required documents and paying the application fee, the system will automatically cross-check your information in several security databases. Once the system rules the legitimacy of your information, you will receive your ETIAS authorization, valid for three years, via E-mail.
However, in some rare cases you might be asked to provide additional information or attend an online interview with an ETIAS officer. ETIAS application approval rate will be 95%.
- Enhanced Border Security
ETIAS will majorly increase the EU’s security against external threats, such as organized crime, illegal migration, epidemiological outbreaks, and terrorism.
- Flexible Application Process
Unlike the traditional Schengen Visa application, ETIAS will take only 15 minutes and requires a completed application form and a valid biometric passport.
- Common Policies for All EU/Schengen Area Countries
By developing the universal formula, the ETIAS system will bring forward the common and harmonized travel policies for all the EU/Schengen Member countries (except Ireland).
- Improved Traveler Experience
Pre-screening the travelers’ information before they even board the plane helps ETIAS contribute to a smoother and more straightforward traveler experience for those planning to visit the EU/Schengen Area.

Talk about religion, politics, and other sensitive topics only.
You should use every means to voice your opinion. French people enjoy a good debate every once in a while. It is best to avoid sensitive topics like politics and religion as you are a tourist, not a local. This is especially true if the topic matter is not well-versed. The French rarely advertise their religious beliefs, and you are expected to do so as a matter of common courtesy.- Jul 7, 2022
